If you use freelancers, you can pay fees via Salary. A freelancer is a self-employed person who receives a fee for completed work – not salary. The freelancer works without an employment relationship, and it is therefore important that the person qualifies as a freelancer according to the law.

If you are unsure whether the person is a freelancer or an employee, we recommend that you seek advice from a professional. You can read more about what indicates that a person is a freelancer here.

Salary reports the fee to SKAT (the Danish Tax Agency), but the freelancer is responsible for paying their own taxes.

Read our freelancer FAQ here.

Guide:

1. If you have freelancers who want their fee reported to a CVR number, you must first enable the function Allow CVR number for freelancers in Advanced Settings here.

2. Go to the Freelancers tab and click Add Freelancer.

3. Enter the freelancer’s basic information and click Continue to communication.

Note: If the freelancer’s fee should be reported to a CVR instead of a CPR number, select CVR number from the drop-down menu under Create via.

4. Choose the language for the payslip (Danish or English) and how the payslip should be sent. Then click Continue to financial information.

5. Enter the freelancer’s bank details.

Note: If you plan to pay via NemKonto, you can select “Foreign account” to proceed with the setup without entering the freelancer’s account number.

After this, you must choose whether the freelancer should use the primary tax card or the secondary tax card.

6. Your freelancer has now been created, and you can begin creating fees. You can read this guide for further instructions.

What is a freelancer?

If you are unsure whether the person is a freelancer or an employee, we recommend that you seek advice from a professional. You can read more about what indicates that the person qualifies as a freelancer here.

Do I have to pay tax on behalf of my freelancer?

No. Freelancers are generally covered by tax type B income. This means that the freelancer is responsible for paying both income tax and labor market contributions (AM contribution) themselves. In other words, neither tax nor AM contribution is automatically withheld from the fee – the freelancer must handle this directly with the Danish Tax Agency.

Why can I not register mileage for my freelancer?

It is not permitted to pay tax-free mileage allowance to freelancers (fee recipients). Therefore, the mileage registration feature is not available for freelancers.

If the freelancer has travel expenses, you can instead reimburse them as part of the fee. However, this must be reported correctly:

  • The fee must be reported in field 36

  • Travel expenses (if reimbursed according to the applicable rates) must be reported in field 38

Can my freelancer get access to the employee app?

Yes, the freelancer can absolutely get access. The process is the same as for regular employees. You can read about how to invite someone to the employee app here.
